چکیده

This study was designed to: (a) investigate the effectiveness of hypnotically suggested analgesia and pleasant imagery conditions in modifying the tolerance of an increasingly intense electrical stimulus, (6) determine the feasibility of increasing analgesic effects by a combination of these conditions (analgesia plus pleasant imagery), (c) explore the hypothesis that 6s with highest levels of state anxiety would show the largest changes in tolerance. Thirty-six female students served as 5s. Simulator and hypnosis 5s were tested for pain tolerance under three conditions. Simulators had no significant tolerance increases. For hypnosis 5s, the analgesia and the analgesia plus pleasant imagery conditions were both effective in modifying tolerance. The analgesia condition produced the highest tolerance increases. The pleasant imagery condition did not produce a significant group tolerance increase. However, an analysis of imagery content suggested that images which were not body oriented did significantly modify tolerance levels. State anxiety was unrelated to tolerance, but there was a consistent negative correlation between trait anxietj' and all tolerance changes for simulator 5s.

Possible relevance of tolerance to analgesic effect of morphine due to chronic inflammatory pain and the role of lumbar spinal cord in this interaction

It has been reported that morphine tolerance does not develop in the presence of chronic pain. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out whether chronic inflammatory pain is able to eliminate or attenuate the developed tolerance to analgesic effect of morphine and also to investigate the role of lumbar spinal cord as a candidate site for this interaction. Tolerance was induced in adult ma...

Voluntary and forced exercises prevent the development of tolerance to analgesic effects of morphine in rats

Objective(s):Morphine is widely used to treat chronic pain. However, its utility is hindered by the development of tolerance to its analgesic effects. Despite the renowned beneficial effects of physical exercise on cognitive functions and signs of morphine withdrawal in morphine-dependent rats, little is known about the roles of voluntary and forced exercises in tolerance to analgesic effect of...

Focused analgesia in waking and hypnosis: effects on pain, memory, and somatosensory event-related potentials.

Somatosensory event-related potentials (SERPs) to painful electric standard stimuli under an odd-ball paradigm were analyzed in 12 high hypnotizable (HH), 12 medium hypnotizable (MH), and 12 low hypnotizable (LH) subjects during waking, hypnosis, and a cued eyes-open posthypnotic condition. In each of these conditions subjects were suggested to produce an obstructive imagery of stimulus percept...

Changes in beta 1 and beta 2 integrin genes expression in rat lumbar spinal cord is supportive of the inhibitory effect of chronic pain on the development of tolerance to morphine analgesia

Introduction: In order to study the alterations of beta 1 and 2 integrins mRNA level in rat lumbar spinal cord following the induction of chronic pain and its effect on the development of tolerance to morphine analgesia, we examined the level of expression of these genes in the presence of chronic pain, which is an inhibitor of morphine tolerance. We used induction of chronic pain alone and ...
